ABSTRACT

Vegetables are rich sources of dietary minerals and vitamins which contribute in various body-building activities and maintenance of good health. The vegetable crops sensitive to inbreeding depression in descending order are carrot, onion, cabbage and cauliflower. Breeding for quality has been unsystematic and often empirical, but significant progress has been made in several vegetable crops. The contribution of vegetables is magnificent in health and livelihood of millions of people across the globe. Breeding method in any crops depends upon the breeding system and genetic architecture resulting from natural selection as well as human selection during the course of cultivation. Carotenoids play an important role in plant reproduction, through their role in attracting pollinators and in seed dispersal, and are essential components of human diets. Chlorophyll is the most important plant pigment and a 'real-life force' that nature uses to explode plants into greenery.
