ABSTRACT

A dream is a picture of the world, our inner world and the world about us. It is a personal recording of a multiplicity of images condensed into a remarkably small package, the manifest dream. Trigger decoding is a way to take the manifest dream snapshot and turn it into a three-dimensional record of the actual emotionally charged event, and the unconscious responses it engendered. The heart of trigger decoding is to understand how a dream event is standing in for a waking-life event and to recognize all aspects of the relationship between the stand-in and the real situation. A dream is extraordinarily faithful to the emotional sense of the events it records; a stand-in image is not simply a disguise chosen arbitrarily, but generally depicts reactions and feelings concerning the real event that have not yet been consciously recognized.
