ABSTRACT

Most people think that a dream happens entirely during sleep, and that we merely remember it the following morning, but it is more complicated than that. The dream as remembered, then, is but a small part of the total dream experience. A dream must be completed by allowing time for loose and unencumbered associations to as much of the surface dream as possible. The advantage of beginning to complete the dream/ associational network in the morning is that it is then available for additional associating, and even for brief periods of dream analysis as moments during the day permit. Failing that, wait for a quiet moment in the evening to engage in the free-associational activity. But remember that this is only the first step in an effort that eventually reaches its climax through the work of trigger decoding.
