ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the manifest images of a dream as a way of obtaining immediate information and insight about waking-life situations. When analyzing a dream, it is usually best to proceed from the surface to the depths-from the manifest dream to its latent contents. Examining a manifest dream tends to produce isolated and static images, difficult to shape into a meaningful whole. They can tell us only one of several stories embodied in the dream. The underlying stories, which have been disguised and transformed, are most pertinently related to the unresolved emotional concerns. And it is these encoded stories that emerge from an analysis of a dream that takes into account triggers, transformations, and disguised messages. Finally, it is almost impossible to safeguard an impression drawn from a manifest dream content with some kind of validating or supportive realization.
