ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses a selection of some of the most significant topics and papers that were presented by Japanese and European scholars and policymakers during the last few meetings. It focuses on how Japan's security policy behaviour was structured and conceptualized during and after the Cold War period. The book aims to discuss a framework to facilitate the initiation and development of confidence-building measures (CBMs) in East Asia. It provides an analysis of investment relations between the European Union (EU) and Japan. Based on the traditions and history of Europe, the book provides a concrete response to the much-needed search for a new code of conduct for conflict prevention in East Asia. Presenting a comparative analysis, it focuses on the mainstreaming of climate change into development cooperation as a promising area for increased EU–Japan cooperation.
