ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues concerning dementia care among Korean American families. First, it provides background information about Korean Americans and dementia, current evidence related to Korean Americans’ knowledge and beliefs about dementia, attitudes and cultural norms regarding family caregiving, and the impact of family caregiving. It then discusses areas of concern and opportunities in meeting the needs of dementia care in Korean American community. The topics discussed include: need for educational outreach, early detection and screening of dementia, culturally and linguistically appropriate screening tools, supportive services for Korean American caregivers, assessment of caregivers, end-of-life care in dementia context, and culturally appropriate dementia care.
