ABSTRACT
Moscow (Moskva) is located in thewest of EuropeanRussia, on theRiverMoskva. It is connected to the Volga river system by the Moscow-Volga Canal. The city’s total area is 2,510 sq km (970 sqmiles). According to official estimates, at January 2016Moscow City had a total population of 12,330,126 and a population density of 4,932.1 per sq km. Some 98.8%of the population lived in urban areas. The city has a south-western boundary with Kaluga Oblast; it is surrounded to the north-west, north and south-east by Moscow Oblast.
