ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the author reflects on four key aspects of teaching and learning. First, students need to understand the issues at stake on both global and local scales. Second, they need to develop their action competence so that they can explore behaviour change on their own terms. Third, students must understand the need to adapt to a changing world; and finally they need to learn to value living in the moment. The author aims to understand the effective pedagogy in the twenty-first century that may apply not only in Aotearoa NZ, but to any educator engaging with students in respect of how they might live with the sea. In Aotearoa NZ, no part of our small country is far from the ocean. People in Aotearoa NZ are familiar with the power of the sea as well as with the risks of flooding and erosion that are an integral part of living near the coast.
