ABSTRACT

When Nigerian actor Nkem Owoh first entered Zambian living rooms through the television screens in the early 2000s, it was in the form of Ukwa, a central character in the Nollywood drama series Superstory, which featured on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) television. This chapter demonstrates that the observations on how Ukwa has become a potent metaphor largely apply to the case of Dorika Ndaifulila, the Zambian comic character created by Zambian comedian, Bob Nkosha. The chapter examines two cases of allusion involving Dorika, both emanating from the Zambian parliament. In the first case, which occurred in March 2015, then Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Michael Kaingu caused controversy when he referred to his fellow member of parliament, Moono Lubezhi, as "Dorika". The chapter further discusses the fact that there is a difference in opinion between the public or audience and the creator of Dorika, Bob Nkosha.
