ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a baseline of information on where the girls are in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. It also provides an in-depth description of the Nigeria Secondary Science national curriculum and statistics and participant information on girls' engagement in science education. In Nigeria, even though female students outnumber male students in many undergraduate programs, overall gender parity is not yet achieved across tertiary polytechnic and university STEM programs. Indigenous Education and Formal Western Education systems were examined to identify what and how Science curricula was taught and their influences on female students' tertiary education course of study through tracking cultural and educational factors in relation to their gendered roles within these systems. Gender distributions across Science programs varied widely with the largest portion of Science program matriculations being male dominated, at 19 programs. The gendered results in STEM areas within the national western system were presented to provide a basis for analysis and discussion.
