ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the written curriculum as well as reports of the enacted curriculum from Igbo Science teachers. Igbo society historically was based on farming so there is a great depth of knowledge about animal husbandry and growing plants in every family. The Igbo also have knowledge of herbal medicines and metallurgy as part of their heritage. The science education curriculum in Nigeria is also based on Western culture; therefore, it requires people from indigenous cultures to constantly cross cultural borders to learn Western science. Information from the teacher interviews and journals indicates some confusion among the Science teachers themselves about what constitutes Indigenous Knowledge. The physiological effects of consuming the toxic chemicals and the resulting chronic and acute illnesses are important topics in the curriculum. Investigations are one place that Indigenous Knowledge could be incorporated into the implementation curriculum.
