ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra-Jamuna Basin, one of the major river basins of South Asia. It focuses on the challenges associated with generating transboundary cooperation and the subsequent need for a dialogue. The chapter also focuses on the journey of the SaciWATERs' Brahmaputra Dialogue initiative, along with the challenges encountered, achievements attained so far, and the way forward. The informed dialogues link researchers, academicians, policy makers, and social actors through a structured communication process. Historical conflicts and dialogues across the riparian nations of the river have played a major role in shaping constructive deliberations for river basin management. There is a need to move past these conflicts if cooperation is expected from the co-riparian nations. The chapter examines the characteristics of the Brahmaputra River Basin along with the prevailing conflicts and discusses the avenues of cooperation.
