ABSTRACT

Islam is a religion without priests; it requires no mediation between God and man. The imam of a mosque is a leader noted for his piety, and therefore chosen to lead the prayers. Friday is the Muslim Sabbath, and in most mosques there is special teaching by the khatib or preacher on that day, so that though a man may pray anywhere at other times, attendance at a mosque is virtually obligatory on a Friday. The Quran, which contains the truths revealed to Muhammad by God, describes the attributes of God and his relationship to man, and lists the religious and moral obligations binding upon those who would submit themselves to God's will. The teaching of the Quran is the basis of all Arab culture. Kuwait before the days of oil was a Muslim state barely touched by outside influences.
