ABSTRACT

Soon after arriving in Kuwait, we drove out in the car so that I might look at the new residential suburbs built by the wealthy middle class. First we went along the straight dual carriageway that runs south parallel to the coast. Here are to be found some of the most bizarre houses ever conceived since the age of reinforced concrete. There are many comparatively conventional buildings, large, three-storied, rectangular; but from among them the eye of the passer-by is assailed by shapes and forms which seem to grow ever more weird and outlandish as one house of ‘advanced design’ succeeds another.
