ABSTRACT

The geographical distribution of the population in Kuwait is governed by the administrative and social aspects of the country. Kuwait City provides 80.0 per cent of the total jobs in the country with 12.4 per cent of the country's population, out of which 60.7 per cent are immigrants. The immigrant labour force is concentrated mainly in three sectors, namely, manufacturing industry, construction and building and services. One of the characteristics of the education sector in Kuwait is the general tendency of the immigrant students to join scientific and technical studies while Kuwaitis join art and theoretical studies. The majority of immigrant households depend on renting accommodation in the Kuwait market and paying rents from their incomes, comprising 89.3 per cent of the total sample. Egyptian emigration to Kuwait is part of the general immigration pattern in the Gulf, Kuwait having known Egyptians prior to the oil discoveries when they came earlier as part of Egyptian educational assistance programmes.
