ABSTRACT

Introduction to Chapter 6: The 1960s and 1970s were a period of turmoil for all aspects of life in America. Some have described the decades as revolutionary, pointing to the unprecedented number of Americans who expressed revolutionary intentions and actively participated in efforts to alter the shape of American civilization in almost every aspect, from civil rights to diplomacy, from society to the economy, and of course, religion. Discussed in this chapter will be the role of religion in the civil rights movement among African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Native Americans, as well as in the women’s and gay rights movements, the environmental movement, the antiwar movement, and the proliferation of “new” religions.
