ABSTRACT

The analysis of the biotechnology news in the Turkish media provides some insightful observations about the trends in cultural authority of science. Mapping the cultural authority of science is basically a boundary work demarcating its language from those of others, discovering its cultural repertoires and delineating how it discursively articulates its authoritative arguments. Stable patterns of internal variation in text types spanning a discursive formation can also provide useful information about the external criteria underlying the contextual variation. Identification of the internal criteria requires the identification of the discursive genres reflecting world views and practices surrounding the biotechnology relevant terms. Media attention to biotechnology in Turkey between 1997 and 2015 period altogether revolves around the Genetically Modified Organisms keyword. Pro arguments about stem cell highlight the potentials of genetic engineering, organ cloning, gene transplantation, regenerative medicine and genetic testing for early diagnosis of diseases and bionic organ production.
