ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on discussions mentor hold with a beginning teacher pre- and post-lesson observation. A beginning teacher has crafted a lesson plan based on their knowledge and understanding of the class and their current level of progress. One key component of a successful pre- or post-lesson observation discussion is structuring the discussion in order to create an environment in which both mentor and the beginning teacher feel comfortable to discuss in depth the lesson they are going to observe/have observed. This includes structuring questions to allow a beginning teacher to share their thoughts effectively. A pre-lesson observation discussion is an opportunity for a beginning teacher and a mentor to reflect on a lesson prior to it being taught. One way of approaching the post-lesson observation discussion is by using the review process. The review process provides a clear structure to support reflection.
