ABSTRACT

This chapter starts by clarifying the concept of collaborative mentoring and who is involved. It then considers examples of collaborative approaches to mentoring to support a beginning physical education teacher and considers the benefits and challenges of implementation. The approaches to collaborative mentoring are: shared planning, teaching, reflection and evaluation; mentoring more than one beginning teacher in a class; collaborative self-development; and multi-agency working. Working with more than one beginning physical education teacher in a classroom and the promotion of co-teaching are effective strategies for more expansive and deeper learning, resulting in dialogue, the sharing of ideas, learning from one another, and reduced feelings of isolation. Multi-agency collaboration provides an opportunity for deep and meaningful partnerships and diversity of provision. It involves bringing together a range of professionals who have a commitment to the development of a beginning teacher through supporting the evidencing of competencies.
