ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book lists the significant areas of research in nanoscience and nanotechnology that may have an impact on nanotechnology and energy, whether at present or in the future. An important characteristic of the nanoscience and nanotechnology is the extensive range of research activities, the goals of which are to invent new tools and techniques for the characterization and study of materials at the nanoscale and for the manufacture and processing of nanoscale gadgets and systems. Nanomagnetics, the study and application of magnetic materials in the nanoscale, is another area of research interest. Nano-characterization research encompasses the advancement of the application of analytical scanning transmission electronic microscopy techniques for determining the electronic structure of interfaces of heterogeneous materials with resolution that goes down to nanometers and below.
