ABSTRACT

I finished my Bachelor of Science exams at the University of Nairobi in 1974. Two days later I went to a medical laboratory at Kenyatta National Hospital. I went to the Director of the lab, Dr Itotia, and requested to work there. He asked if I had graduated. Yes, I told him. “What were you studying?” I told him and then he wrote a small note, a handwritten note, and because he was a pathologist the hand note was just terrible actually! He sent me to the University of Nairobi where there was a new unit being created called the WHO Immunology Research and Training Centre, in the Department of Pathology. It was being managed by the World Health Organization.
