ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book gives a general survey of the vocabulary of a Classical Persian poem as well as a presentation of two special vocabularies within the general vocabulary: Arabic loan-words and Sufi-religious terminology. It describes some of the connections between these two special vocabularies. The book is also concerned with the statistical properties of the vocabulary of a Persian author, but it does not pay special attention to the Arabic loan-words. The complete concordance of the text of Tariq ut-tahqiq is the basis of the further word-lists and discussions in the book. In the frequency word-list the words belonging to the two special vocabularies examined in this book are marked with letters to the left of the number of order of the entries: t for a word belonging to the Sufi-religious vocabulary, a for a word belonging to the Arabic loan-word vocabulary.
