ABSTRACT

This is the introductory chapter to a treatise on the musicality of leadership. The point of departure is that music occupies a privileged position in human life, which is consequential for both leading a music ensemble and leading any organisation in a musical way. Seeking to understand the common zone between music and leadership, this chapter draws on leadership theory, as well as literature and research on conducting. It orients itself around the choral conductor role, and choral leadership is seen through the experiences of those who are affected by it—the singers.
