ABSTRACT

In addition to the visible and teachable conductor competences, the conductor’s existential foundation significantly impacts leadership effectiveness. This foundation encompasses authority, aesthetic vision and willpower. Equally important here is the commitment that the conductor brings to the ensemble, which manifests itself through the degree of devotion and sincerity, as well as ability to be present in the music-making moment—with the self, with the ensemble, in the music. Conducting is one of the icons of corporeal leadership, and there needs to be a palpable fit between the music and the conductor’s posture, breath and gestures.
