ABSTRACT

Five recurring problems that have limited an examination of culture and the individual include: (1) What is the ontology of culture?; (2) What is the locus of culture?; (3) How do we account for intracultural diversity?; (4) What is the relationship of culture and behavior?; and, (5) How does culture relate to social-psychological constructs like value, attitude, and belief? These five problems can be adequately resolved by a cognitive theory of culture. This resolution is explored in detail in this chapter.
