ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the strategy, the tactics—real and perceived—and how the Clinton campaign and the Democratic Party laid out and implemented its strategy hoping to elect the first woman president. Clinton left the Democratic Convention on a high note, and enjoyed quite a steep convention bump coming out of that spectacularly successful week for the Democrats. The first day of the Democratic Convention also was the first release by WikiLeaks of the stolen, private emails of Democratic National Committee staffers. Trump's behavior immediately after the Democratic Convention gave Democrats the occasion to crystallize a theme that had started to mature during the primary season when he started his campaign by insulting Mexican immigrants. Another tactic Clinton used during the general election was to underscore Trump's ties to the Alt Right. There was much talk about whether Clinton would be able to hold on to the "Obama Coalition", that demographic group of voters that helped elect President Obama to office twice.
