ABSTRACT

Modern representations of the Old Norse god Þórr revolve around two basic and arguably complementary characteristics: strength and control over thunder. This chapter introduces the study made over the course of this book of the basis of these representations in early Icelandic and Scandinavian mythology and religion. After reviewing previous major scholarly studies of Þórr, I argue that explicit statements of a connection must be sought from our sources to avoid circular reasoning. Definitions of key terminology, such as myth and religion, are also offered.
