ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses obstetric surgeries. It also explains Indications, preoperative assessment, choice of technique, preoperative management, Intraoperative care, medications, postoperative analgesia and postoperative management for the same. These surgeries include elective caesarean delivery, emergency caesarean section and operative vaginal delivery and acquired cardiac disease. Elective caesarean is the most common obstetric operation. It is often performed as an urgent or emergency procedure. Elective caesarean delivery is most frequently performed under regional anaesthesia in the UK. As pregnancy progresses, multisystemic physiological changes develop rapidly. Obstetric anaesthetists must understand these to enable them to provide optimum care. Cardiac disease is the leading cause of maternal death in the UK. During the first and early second stages of labour, visceral pain is experienced. This is usually felt in the abdomen, sacrum and back. The UK maternal mortality rate is currently the lowest it has ever been.
