ABSTRACT

In 1936, when Universal released a sequel to Dracula's Daughter, the Nazis were in power in Germany. They were fascinated by the occult, named a military operation after werewolves and saw vampires as part of their folklore. The Nazis had to demonize the Jews, who were often successful professionals, and to promote notions of racial superiority, for which they found evidence in legends. They used, Nagl had claimed in an analysis, "a tremendous turning back of culture, away from the age of reason and consciousness, toward the age of a 'sleepwalking certainty', the age of supra-rational magic." Weirdest of the weird, the Nazis were besotted by the World Ice Theory. In his 1912 book Glacial Cosmogony, Hanns Horbiger argued with no evidence at all that white 'Aryan' man was not descended from the apes but rather came from 'divine sperma' brought to earth by meteors.
