ABSTRACT

Sometimes a client’s inability to move forward in their career decision making can be rooted in their past experiences; making sense of one’s career history can raise self-awareness and help people to feel more confident about facing the future. This chapter offers three techniques that can help clients to make sense of their career history. The first technique is a short personality questionnaire that can allow individuals to reflect on particular aspects of their characters and to consider whether these may have played a part in their career highs and lows. The second technique is drawn from Mark Savickas’ Career Construction Interview (Savickas, 2015) and provides a set of questions that can help people to identify life themes. The final technique, the Career Genogram, gives people a tool that they can use to facilitate a discussion about the influences of their family on their own career.
