ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the occupational programmes at the professional level using analysed empirical data from participants with expertise in the education of doctors and Emergency Medicine clinicians. Clinical practitioners and teachers, OP15, OP16, OP19 and OP21, view their clinical activities as part of a social science discipline rather than just a science-based discipline in the sense that their professional work involves people with their socio-cultural related experiences, which may be different to the clinicians' experiences. They need to navigate, understand and identify the medical conditions of their patients. For professional updating, the activities include ongoing clinical learning and management and leadership aspects of their professional work. For teaching, the activities include accessing a formal teaching qualification, curriculum development, e-learning, educational pedagogy and qualitative research methods. Regarding both the strands, the activities include attendance at conferences and accessing the relevant publications.
