ABSTRACT

Games are a staple of language lessons, allowing teachers to use the TL in a uniquely enjoyable way. This chapter offers a rationale for effective games followed by a description of a number of games which maximise both learning and enjoyment. While playing games, the students' attention is on the message, less on the form of the language. The chapter looks at how to exploit a few well-known games such as battleships for near-beginner and low-intermediate students, Simon Says for near-beginner and intermediate levels, Bingo games for beginners and intermediate level students, TL quiz games for advanced level students. While Categories is a vocabulary building game which goes by various names and can be used with near-beginners and intermediate students, Alibi is a winner for intermediate and advanced groups. Silly story writing is for intermediate to advanced level students.
