ABSTRACT

This chapter develops the theory of constraints (TOC) thinking processes needed to answer the question: what to change. It develops and implements the concept of Evaporating Cloud. The TOC practitioner goes coolly about making system improvements in a logical and systematic manner and suggests win–win solutions that last. The chapter provides the Core Cloud as a visual and logical base of the Current Reality Tree. The cloud is a communication tool to clearly describe a conflict. The Conflict/Communication Current Reality Tree provides the deepest insight into the core problem or the constraint of the system and includes all of the undesirable effects (UDEs). The UDE, a Cloud to communicate the conflict, and uncovering assumptions without blaming anyone, are the keys to conflict resolution. In contrast to traditional methods of instruction, the TOC approach directly addresses both the intellectual and motivational obstacles articulated by instructors and their students.
