ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to defining purposes of scientific research. A review of the basic literature list is done in the field of research methodology in architecture, focused on either basic research based on ex post studies or on research supporting design processes, that is, ex ante and evidence-based design. Participation of occupants in architectural research is described, as well as its suitability to social needs and ongoing life processes within a built environment. The issue of triangulation and monitoring, which makes it possible to confirm the reliability of research, is also covered. In the long term, it is possible to check the course of changes that both objects and occupants’ needs undergo.
