ABSTRACT

This chapter is of key importance to the whole study, looking at basic research methods applied in architecture, such as logical argumentation, historical interpretation, experiments, quantitative and statistical method, qualitative method, simulation, case studies, intervention action research, heuristics, and mixed methods. Post-occupancy evaluation is used in the chapter as a method characteristic for qualitative research. Each method is illustrated by examples from the author’s individual studies and her research team. Annexes serve to complement that information. Basic data concerning definitions, research issues, actions and attitudes of researchers, techniques and tools, and anticipated effects are included in boxes that constitute a summary of the most important information concerning a given method.
