ABSTRACT

Like goats and their appetites, college- and career-ready students need to be opportunistic about what they learn. In order for students to be opportunistic about learning, they, like goats on the lookout for Greenbriar shoots, need to be hungry for learning opportunities. It is an attitude that creates a constant thirst for discovery, exploration, and learning. No student had to be told to keep up, pay attention, or stay in line because the students were so focused on the teacher and what interesting thing she would find or do. It took only a few minutes extra, but the rewards for the students would last a lifetime. This teacher understood that the best way to get students to be opportunistic learners was to model how to do it herself. Powers of ObservationStudents notice all sorts of stuff about teachers, their classrooms, and their friends, but sometimes something might as well be invisible.
