ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the arrival at the Oliver Zangwill Centre, a treatment centre for brain injury survivors in a more advanced state of recovery. Although it was logical progression of the authors recovery to be discharged from Wellington hospital, several months after his hospital graduation he found himself feeling a bit lost at times. Although he had benefited from some National Health Service (NHS) treatment, this was an extremely limited affair. A place that had been lauded repeatedly when he had been in the Wellington hospital was a small regional centre in a corner of Cambridgeshire, in the city of Ely. In this city was a hospital that had a small specialist unit. Situated in this provincial hospital was one of the world's most fêted neurorehabilitation centres. The goal of this centre, named Oliver Zangwill Centre, was to help patients reach their greatest potential, despite whatever odds were stacked against them.
