ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the stages of self-awareness and acceptance of the changes resulting from brain injury. It examines the speech and language therapy in the progression of the journeys of understanding. One day in hospital when the author managed to find a mirror, he took a long, hard look at himself. He thought that he actually looked pretty much the same as before. His pre-crash self was particularly self-content. His satisfied self-thought he had academically distinguished himself by completing a rigorous and difficult education to peer-reviewed recognition. At the mental stage of recovery author had reached by the end of his stay in Wellington hospital, although he was not accepting of the deficits he had, he had quickly reached intellectual awareness of the same. Through various therapy sessions and self-study, he learned that there are several stages to dealing with metacognition. His arrival at full acceptance could only be achieved when he could feel the full spectrum of emotions.
