ABSTRACT
This study aimed to identify the infrastructure needs of junior high schools’ (or equivalent grades) as well as location determination using a social demand approach and Geographical Information Systems (GISs) in the coastal areas of the West Java province. This study focused on limited educational facilities and infrastructure needs, particularly related to the number of new schools and new classrooms. The method used in this research was the explorative method followed by descriptive method. The data analysis techniques used in this study were ratio analysis, infrastructure needs projection analysis and GIS. The results show that the number of junior high schools in Sukabumi and Cianjur is still not significant in comparison with the number of elementary schools. The difference average was > 80%. The study concludes that up to the year 2020, both in Sukabumi and Cianjur district, there will be a need to build new school building(s) in accordance with the SPM (minimum service standard). The locations will then need to be based on the population distribution of identified locations, which later on can then be proposed as the appropriate locations of junior high schools.
