ABSTRACT

This paper aims to explore Halliday’s aspects of language development in order to realize a good education in an Indonesian university context. There are three aspects of language development explored in this paper. First, learning language that means a language is learned to enable students to communicate in spoken and written forms. Second, learning through language that means a language as a medium to learn other things such as critical thinking and characters. Third, learning about language that means a language as an object that is studied such as its grammatical system. At the end of the discussion, the paper suggests a genre-based approach developed under systemic functional linguistics that can be applied by lecturers of any subject to realize a good education in an Indonesian university context.
