ABSTRACT

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) often complicates the course of mitral stenosis (MS). It significantly affects the clinical scenario and the long-term prognosis of MS. The PH is frequently out of proportion to the degree of elevation of left atrial pressure (LAP) indicating a rise in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). In the words of Paul Wood “The behaviour of the pulmonary vascular resistance is perhaps the most important physiological event in mitral stenosis and, to a large extent, determines the course and pattern of the disease.”
