ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe what contributes to a healthy relationship between teacher and student, and suggest practices for building healthy attachment, particularly with clients and students who have experienced relational trauma. We also address the importance of power dynamics in the teacher–student relationship, and explore triggers, boundaries, shame, and shame resilience. Like any therapeutic relationship, the most profound healing takes place in the context of trust, and requires a combination of vulnerability, intimacy, and respect of boundaries.
