ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the historiographical debates concerning commons and exclusiveness. To refute the statement of Garrett Hardin, commons scholars have stressed the exclusive tendencies of common pool institutions and the beneficial effects of limiting the community of users. This chapter questions this one-sided focus and introduces a study of a particular inclusive historical society. Can inclusive commons be successful in the long run?
