ABSTRACT

This chapter examinesthe ways that the advertising of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) displays bodies and engages the public.PETA displays violence inflicted upon women to incite a reaction about atrocities exacted on animals, thus using the oppression of women to focus on cruelty against animals, but not cruelty against women. Contrary to PETA, social justice activism can support change without transferring oppressions from one recipient to another. For aspiring social justice activists, it is important to be aware of the intersections of race, class, gender and sexuality in the organizations that they support.
