ABSTRACT

The teaching of singing continues to be an integral part of the choral curriculum throughout high school. High school singers reported that the more time they spent together, the smaller the ensemble, and the more intense the rehearsals and performances, the stronger they identified as a team. Choral directors need to be aware of and respect both groups of students for practical reasons such as assigning voice parts, sectional seating, concert dress, and rehearsal language. Although both young men's and women's voices continue to mature throughout the high school years, they are more settled than in the middle school years, and the traditional classifications of SATB can be used. There is no simple "quick and dirty" audition procedure for high school choirs as there was for middle school choirs. Sight-reading examples should also be sequenced from simple to more challenging in order to determine proper choir placement.
