ABSTRACT

Effective choral teachers need to know where to find high quality choral music and how to select appropriate music for their choirs. A grading system for vocal, tonal, and rhythmic challenges is a useful aid for music selection, and can be found in Teaching Music Through Performance in Choir. The aspects of a performance that may be interpreted as authentic can range from the size of the choir and its tone quality to the type of accompaniment. Choral music directors must take steps to ensure that the performance of sacred music in any public school is "religiously neutral" in that the music is selected based on musical, educational, and artistic value, rather than to promote religious views. However, for the choral conductor specifically seeking such repertoire, a list is provided for bass clef choirs and for mixed and treble choirs.
