ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates case studies with the three larger strategies: starting with a philosophical launch pad for a thematic unit, gathering sources from both sides for discussions on difficult issues and shifting perspective from present to past and back again. These case studies will spark ideas about how to stay calm amid potential political chaos in the own classroom. In addition, it also reflects on moments when it has felt impossible to stay nonpartisan. The well-behaved students in the room think about whether they would ever have the courage to break rules in the name of a revolution. The less-well-behaved kids see their own small or large rebellions as part of an important history they may not have realized existed. The chapter describes a framework to discuss the parameters of the kind of courage it takes to stand up against the crowd, even a little bit, at any point in the past, present, or future.
