ABSTRACT

It is the first day of class. I am nervous, and so are my students. The room is silent, all eyes on me and everyone on their best behavior—cell phones put away, first day outfits and hair neatly in place. I can tell they know what to expect—teacher after teacher will fill the day reviewing expectations, syllabi, class rules—no need to engage the brain as we sleep walk our way through a whole day of blah-blah-blah.
