ABSTRACT

The Sultanate of Oman is an Arab country located on the south-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Oman has demonstrated great achievements in healthcare services. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos kept his promise in 1970 to prioritise on the development of the health of the country through the establishment of the Ministry of Health (MoH) in 1971. This was recognised in a 191-country study by the World Health Organisation, when Oman was ranked first in the world for its levels of health and eighth for the overall performance of its health system. The cultural and economic stability, compared to many other countries in the region, represent positive forces for change in Oman. Healthcare reform is an essential step to be taken in order to improve patient safety. However, as ensuring success is challenging, healthcare reform must be done in a well-planned, fully informed manner. Oman intends to maintain the achievements in the healthcare system during the past four decades.
