ABSTRACT

The number of people age 50+ living in the Czech Republic is approaching 4 million, with16 percent over 65 years old. More than half of these seniors are overweight or obese. With increasing age, the number of years with poor health in later life is extremely high. Physical activities can improve the quality of life and improve the mental and physical condition of seniors. This chapter introduces the health status and demographic situation in the Czech Republic. It also focuses on suitable physical activities and their benefits for seniors. It equates sport organizations with high senior membership and mentions other activities, which are popular and wide spread among seniors. The chapter further analyzes the self-concept and body image of the older population regarding physical activity. The conclusion summarizes the benefits of physical activity for seniors’ body shapes and includes recommendations for improving their physical activity programs.
